Outstanding Academic Dr. Sayak Valencia Addresses Gore Capitalism and "Glotaritarismo" During Her Visit to the Universidad de Valparaíso

Last Friday, March 31, the outstanding Dr. Sayak Valencia — poet, philosopher, feminist theorist, Mexican essayist, and performance artist — visited the Universidad de Valparaíso to give her lecture "From Gore Capitalism to Snuff Politics. New Normality and "Glotaritarismo".

The event was co-organized by Fondecyt 11220123 “Engineering Culture and interdisciplinary approach”, the Center for Interdisciplinary Studies in Social Theory and Subjectivity, the Faculty of Sciences of the Universidad de Valparaíso, the Department of Gender, Politics and Culture of the Faculty of Social Sciences of the Universidad de Playa Ancha and the Anillo "Dissonances: Community, University and Feminist Irruption" project.

In the conference presented by Dr. Andrea Vera Gajardo and moderated by Dr. Claudia Montero — member of the research team of Dissonances — Dr. Valencia addressed key points of her work “Gore Capitalism: Economic Control, Violence and Narco-empowerment” (2010), which then led to questions from the audience.

"Gore Capitalism is not simply a criminal economy, but reinforces certain logics and social choreographies regarding gender, in the case of Mexico and other places, sexism. The contribution of Gore Capitalism is not only financial, but how it is combined with colonial logics, such as the dehumanization of certain populations and crystallized in a male subject", said Dr. Valencia.

This activity also allowed the people who attended the conference to share with the essayist in a coffe break, nurturing a space for discussion and conversation around the concepts raised during her presentation.
